They shoot at their target like a dart to a dartboard hitting the bull’s eye. They can take down the strongest man and cut deeper than a knife and can penetrate further than a bullet wounding flesh. What are they? They are the power of words. Rather the words are little or many, they roll from the tongue with a purpose full of meaning.
The Bible states in James 3:5 the tongue is small, but can do mighty things. There’s an old saying, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, words do hurt. Words spoken to hurt or have an evil intent can leave emotional scars. The Bible refers to the tongue in James 3:8 as poison. It can destroy confidence, ruin self-esteem, and destroy relationships. That’s why the Bible defines it as a poison because it can kill and destroy. Because words have power one must be careful with the words we say. We must speak positive to build up and not negative to tear down. Once something is said it’s hard to undo the damage. James 3:9-10 instructs us that good and evil shouldn’t come from the same mouth. The Bible states in Matthew 12:34, whatever inside the heart, it will come out of the mouth. So when there’s good inside, good will come out.
Proverbs 18:21 states death and life are in the power of the tongue. We must speak life and not create death. We can speak life by building others up through encouraging words and speaking positive. We speak death when we cuss, speak hate or negative of someone. Choose how your words will have power by speaking life today.
